For one of the Leadership service projects that I participated in, our leadership group went to Ivanhoe. The group I was assigned to had the job of cleaning up brush and weeds out of the yard of one of the Ivanhoe locals. At first, I wasn’t really into it. I did not really feel like working and it was extremely cold so I just stood there with a shovel in my hands pretending to do work. After a little while I ended up warming up to the idea of doing the work and started actually working hard. At the end of the day, almost all of the brush had been cleared and it was amazing how much work our group finished. The people that lived at the house were incredibly thankful and seeing the smile on their faces was definitely worth it.
I feel like our group really made an impact because we did some things that many of the locals could not physically do. It just felt good that we were helping these nice people. I feel like we really impacted their lives and showed them that we actually had fun doing this work. On the other side, I was also impacted by the people we helped. It really made me feel good to see people with so little material things and so little money really be happy. They helped me to see that having money isn’t everything. They had spirit and love for each other and that is honestly the only thing they need to truly be happy. This service project mattered to me because of the impact we made on Ivanhoe. The fact that all of the groups helped the people of Ivanhoe accomplish so many tasks that could not be done otherwise really is a great thing and makes this matter even more.
This service project altered my view on a quite a few things. As far as leadership is concerned, this gave support to the fact that being task-oriented is an important quality for effective leadership. Our task in Ivanhoe was to clean up all the brush and put a smile on the local’s faces. This gave us extra motivation and helped us accomplish the task more efficiently. This altered my view on citizenship by showing me that material things and money are not the only things that matter in the world. Just because they are poor does not mean I should treat them as if they are lower than any of us. If they are happy then that is all that really matters. This service project altered my views on life in general by helping me to see that happiness is what really matters in life. It helped me to realize that instead of chasing some job that will make me a lot of money and miserable, I should pursue something that I love and enjoy. Something that I would do for free (even though I still would need to get paid but that is the idea). I would much rather be happy doing something I love and getting lesser money than being miserable. I would love to do be involved in more service projects. In fact, I have already participated in another service project in which I helped pack food that would eventually be distributed to those who are less fortunate. Throughout my next three years, I will pursue more service opportunities because that feeling of helping people is irreplaceable.
We ended our day at Ivanhoe eating dinner and dancing with the locals. This was extremely fun because we really got to know them more. Not only did we meet more of them but I also met more people within our group. Overall, it was just a great time. I would definitely love to do another service project like this in the near future.
