Individual Group Project Reflection
Individual Group Project Reflection
From the moment our group first met, we knew we would work really well together. Everyone was incredibly nice and we all agreed on the first decision: how we would present our team project. We chose the Citizenship Papers because we felt that this was an effective way of getting our information across. Compiling various things into a book seemed like an easy and efficient choice. The next decision was what topic we would do our project on. Unfortunately, I missed the class in which this was decided. Thankfully, when I got back the rest of my project group (Michelle Hettmann, John Irwin, and Samantha Hall) explained what they chose and why they had chosen it. They decided on the topic of diversity because it is a large part of every day life, especially on a diverse campus such as Virginia Tech’s. We also felt that the word was, in large part, too closely associated with race. Diversity can apply to many different things such as ways of thinking, personal preference, culture, gender, etc. This topic offered a broad base with which we could build a great project.
The first time our team met (out of class) was in Pritchard on the Wednesday before the Friday the Project Proposal was due. All of our team members were there on time and we had an overall great time discussing how we would frame our project and what we would put in the project proposal. The environment carried very little stress as our team had a good amount of time to think about what we wanted and everyone was open and accepting to new ideas. In this meeting, we also laid out a schedule. This was very important because this provided deadlines for which we complete different parts of our project. We also came up with different ideas that we could incorporate into the book. The meeting we had in Pritchard was awesome as I felt a great sense of teamwork while also feeling incredibly productive. That Friday we turned in our project proposal and the next week, we received our grade, which turned out to be a 96. With the project proposal approved, it was then turn to set our plans for the book in action.
The actual gathering of information for the book really didn’t take too much effort. John and Michelle made and printed off numerous surveys that we could give to people, asking various questions having to do with how diversity plays a role in their life, how they define diversity, etc. An online survey was made and paper surveys were made in which participants could write anything they want having to do with diversity and even draw pictures. We decided that we would each hand out a good amount of them to our various groups of friends. We felt this added to the whole “diversity” theme. After a few weeks of collecting, we still felt that the collection was missing something. That was when Analise gave us some new great ideas on how to make our book more interesting. We then incorporated those ideas and ended up with a good amount of varying and creative responses on the topic of diversity. The collection process was easy to handle and didn’t cause much stress. I just handed out a good amount of the surveys to my friends, collected them, and gave them to Michelle, who was compiling the book.
After the collection process, it was time for the home stretch. All of the responses were given to Samantha and Michelle and they bounded them together into a book. Unfortunately, John and I were unable to see the book until we picked it up to bring it to the showcase. The project turned out amazing! It was presented incredibly well and many different opinions on diversity were shown in many different ways. While at the showcase, John and I talked to various people about diversity and whether it was really an issue or not. Great conversation took place and all that looked throughout the book came away impressed.
Overall, this team project was a great experience. Our team showed great chemistry and productivity. Because we did not procrastinate, we got things in on time and never really worried about anything. Although I do wish that I had a little bit more responsibility, I feel that the tasks were split up about right and everyone came away from this project generally happy. Working with this team exemplified some of the topics we discussed in the class having to do with authenticity, accountability, productivity, and more. I am glad I had the opportunity to experience this with the great people that were in my project group and I would definitely do this again.
